Spark AR
Meta

I manage the Spark tooling content design team, leading org-level strategy and creating growth plans to elevate the impact of my team and the content design discipline.

Meta Spark Studio is an industry-leading augmented reality tool that people use to make immersive experiences for Meta platforms. I worked for 2 years as a content designer on the software team, developing a deep understanding of the product before moving into management.

Strategy

As both a manager and an IC, I’ve been a key contributor to strategy, using mission statements to focus roadmaps, making sure strategies are rooted in data and projects are accurately scoped, and working with leadership to prioritise the most impactful opportunities.

Creation tools

One of the biggest pain points for creators using Meta Spark Studio is creating 3D objects that meet the software’s size guidelines. And often, reducing the size of the object decreases the visual quality and diminishes the overall AR experience. To improve this experience, my team created Spark AR Toolkit, an add-on in Blender (a 3D computer graphics software), to helps creators optimise their objects without impacting visual integrity.

My work included:

  • Naming the feature

  • Creating the information hierarchy for the toolkit

  • Determining and defining terminology

  • Creating user flows to increase awareness and usage of the toolkit

  • Collaborating with content writers to create documentation for the tool

I also launched two experiences that help users navigate Meta Spark Studio and learn how to create high quality AR experiences: an onboarding tour and templates. The onboarding experience is a guided tour of the interface that introduces creators to the layout the software and teaches them what’s possible with the software. Templates are pre-made AR experiences that can be customised, decreasing the amount of time it takes to make an experience and providing inspiration and education for novice users. Both of these experiences increased retention and the amount of AR experiences creators published.

My work included:

  • Designing the experiences, including working with UX research to determine the best user flow and tone of voice

  • Leading the content design, creating design patterns and writing the content

  • Creating guidelines to enable any designer to make clear and consistent template experiences
